The Many Uses Of A Hot Air Balloon

When you think of hot air balloons, images of family days out and birthday celebrations come to mind. That is because a lot of hot air balloon rides are for celebrations with the family! But balloons actually have a lot more uses then for just commercial use. Read on for all the uses hot air balloons have!

A Helping Hand During Wartime.

In the past, hot air balloons were called up in the line of duty. During the Second World War hot air balloons were used to protect the city of London below. They were adapted and called barrage balloons. They were filled with air and floated up into the London skyline. By doing so, they obstructed the city below from dive bombers. No air craft could get near enough to drop bombs on the city, as the balloons were in the way. They saved thousands of people living in the city of London.

Eureka!

It may sound strange to some, but hot air balloons are used as a means of conducting research. As they are extremely lightweight they can be sent into the sky and record information. Balloons are used regularly to conduct experiments about how weather can affect certain things. For instance, a balloon was launched into the sky over the Mediterranean Sea to better understand extreme weather conditions.

Eureka! Part II

But this research is not only used over seas. Balloons also make excellent flying equipment to explore the rain forest. The rain forest is a vast, dense space, making it difficult to spot any changes to the landscape. Hot air balloons are fitted with cameras and flown over the rain forest canopy. This way they can document how it looks, and then take photos some time later and compare them. This allows experts to learn more about the rain forest, through the use of hot air balloons.

In Need Of Some Assistance?

If so, balloons can show you the way. Balloons are rather large contraptions, which makes them perfect for advertising space! Lots of agencies have cottoned on to this idea and have branded hot air balloons to advertise themselves. This most commonly happens at fairs and festivals, as they are easy to spot from a long distance. More recently, they have been used as a means of signalling a first aid tent, so that those in need can get to help as quickly as possible.

Church of England decision day on female bishops; vote by lay members is crucial

LONDON - The Church of England's governing body is voting on whether it will permit women to serve as bishops or continue debating the issue for several more years.

The push to muster a two-thirds majority among lay members of the General Synod is expected to be close on two votes, beginning with whether to adopt the legislation as English law. A second vote would follow on whether to incorporate the change in church law.

Votes among bishops and clergy in the synod are expected to pass easily. Archbishop Rowan Williams and his successor, Bishop Justin Welby, both strongly support the change.

If the measure fails, church officials say it could take five years to go through all the steps leading up to another vote.

Thanks, Mail Carrier | Holiday Home Entertaining Tips with the ...

As we head into the holiday entertaining season, I'm looking forward to gatherings with family, visiting with friends, and all of the tasty meals that will surely be a part of both. What can I say? I've never met a pumpkin pie that I didn't like!

But when it comes to entertaining here at home, there is always the added worry of making sure our house is up to par for guests. Even if I've already prepped the food and put together a fabulous playlist, it's important to not forget that cleanliness and scent are just as important when throwing a party.

Fortunately, Evette Rios, home expert and The Chew correspondent, has a few tips to make your home inviting for all of your guests during holiday entertaining.

Putting Cooking Odors to the Test
You want the taste of a delicious, flavorful meal to linger in your mouth, but who wants the smell to linger in their home? Whether you're cooking salmon fillets or a curry dish, try using an air purifier, like the Honeywell AirGenius, with an odor absorbing pre-filter to help reduce unwanted odors in a breeze.

Cleaning House
Even if you keep your home extremely neat, dust has a way of collecting on TV sets and other surfaces in your home. Need help fighting dust? Use an air purifier to help capture airborne dust before it settles, reducing the levels that can accumulate. It may even help cut cleaning time before guests arrive!

Smell Me Not
You like to burn candles but don't like the smoke that rises up when you blow out the flame? Use an air purifier to help reduce smoke particles from tobacco smoke, candles, cooking and fireplaces.

Fresh in a Flash
Scrambling to scrub every inch of the house and endless hours in the kitchen may deter your need to entertain. Before your next dinner party, turn on the Honeywell with Febreze Freshness Cool & Refresh Fan and your home will smell fresher in minutes.

Combining two devices into one, the new Honeywell with Febreze Freshness Cool & Refresh Fan combines convenient odor elimination and cooling power with ease. This new fan provides wide area cooling with its oscillation feature, and also uses Febreze Set&Refresh scent cartridges for whole room odor elimination and freshening.

As I'm always a fan of any product that can perform multiple duties, I couldn't wait to see the Cool & Refresh Fan in person to help prepare my home for the holidays.

Right away I was happy to see that Honeywell had given this fan a clean, slim, modern design, as I could see it fitting right in with the decor in just about any kitchen, bedroom, dorm room or more.

Plus, the 16.4" height isn't at all overwhelmingly large, so there is no worry about this taking up too much space in large or small rooms.

A nearly foolproof fan, Honeywell has made it possible to cool and refresh a space in three easy steps.

First, open the Set&Refresh Scent Cartridge Compartment and and insert the Cartridge right inside.

Next, use the fan's oscillation button and speed control dial to choose the amount and direction of the air flow.
Finally, the Scent Control Dial easily lets you adjust the amount of odor that is released ? from strong to none at all. The scent cartridges last up to 30 days and the powerful fan does a great job of spreading the Febreze freshness around!
With its quiet operation and mild and pleasant fragrance (the smell is not at all overpowering, and I appreciate that I can adjust it depending on my mood or any other odors in the house), the Honeywell with Febreze Freshness Cool & Refresh Fan leaves the room cool and fresh.

I don't know about you, but realizing that there is an unpleasant odor in the air when guests are arriving would leave me more frazzled than discovering a plate that wasn't fully clean. At least I could quickly grab that dish off of the table or cover it up with food! Instead, the unobtrusive design and ease of use of this fan eliminates those worries and lets me focus on enjoying my time spent with family and friends.

Retailing for $29.99 (directly from Honeywell or on Amazon.com), you can find out much more about the Cool & Refresh Fan by visiting HoneywellFanSavings.com and connecting with them on Facebook and Twitter.

And, thanks to their generosity, one person will head into the holiday season with a fresh-smelling home as well, because...

One lucky person will win a Honeywell with Febreze Freshness Cool & Refresh Fan!

UK's Biggest Home Improvement Programme Since The Second ...

image

No, not the interest you?d pay on a loan, interest as in attention given it.? Interesting how this parallels the U.S.? home improvement program which was part of the job stimulus program.?

From the Telegraph??.

Green Deal ?in tatters? as no-one registers

The launch of the Coalition?s flagship green energy project is ?in tatters? after a Government minister admitted that not a single household has yet registered for the deal.

The Green Deal encourages homeowners to take out a loan to make their house more energy-efficient. The project goes live in 10 weeks but households have had since October 1 to have their home assessed for the scheme prior to its launch.

However Greg Barker, the climate change minister, has admitted that ?no assessments have yet been lodged? on the Government?s official register by homeowners.

Last night the energy industry called on the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) to launch an urgent marketing campaign to alert homeowners to the scheme.

Under the Green Deal people can borrow up to ?10,000 from a private sector loan provider and have loft and wall insulation fitted in their homes. The loan is repaid over a period of up to 25 years through higher bills. The idea is that bills will fall once the loan has been paid off because the houses need less energy.

Speaking in June 2011, Mr Barker said that the Green Deal would be ?the biggest home improvement programme since the Second World War?.

In an effort to kick-start interest, DECC last month announced a ?125 million ?cashback? scheme, offering homes up to ?1,000 if they sign up as ?early adopters?.

Ms Berger said that homeowners are being put off by the Deal?s complicated finance arrangements: ?The scheme had the potential to create thousands of jobs and help everyone lower their energy bills. Instead bungling ministers have squandered this opportunity by designing a scheme that is a bad deal for the public and doing nothing to promote it.?

How bad can a government program be to have no one sign up for it?? They can?t even give away ?1,000 for someone to sign on to this program.?

Israeli military counts 800-plus Gaza airstrikes

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) - Israel's military says it has struck more than 800 targets in the Gaza Strip, as it expands a fierce air assault responding to rocket launches from the Palestinian territory.

The military's early Saturday count includes 180 overnight airstrikes. The campaign began Wednesday with the assassination of the ruling Hamas militant group's military chief after days of heavy rocket fire from Gaza.

The Gaza Interior Ministry says Israeli aircraft have struck government and police compounds, smuggling tunnels and a three-story apartment building.

Militants have struck back with about 500 rockets, including one unprecedented attack aimed at the holy city of Jerusalem.

The Israeli military has also called up thousands of reservists and massed troops and armored vehicles along the border with Gaza, signaling a ground invasion could be imminent.

Obama to balance praise, pressure in historic Myanmar visit

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Poised to become the first U.S. head of state to travel to Myanmar, President Barack Obama will attempt to strike a balance on Monday between praising the government's progress in shaking off military rule and pressing it for further reforms.

Obama will meet President Thein Sein, a former junta member who has spearheaded reforms since taking office in March 2011, and famed opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who led the struggle against military rule and, like Obama, is a Nobel Peace Prize laureate. She is now a lawmaker.

Obama's trek to Myanmar is meant to highlight what the White House has touted as a major foreign policy achievement -- its success in pushing the country's generals to enact changes that have unfolded with surprising speed over the past year.

But some international human rights group object to the Myanmar visit, saying Obama is rewarding the country's government for a job they regard as incomplete.

Speaking in Thailand on the eve of his landmark visit to the former pariah state, Obama denied he was going there to offer his "endorsement" or that his trip was premature.

Instead, he insisted his intention was to acknowledge that Myanmar, also known as Burma, had opened the door to democratic change but there was still much more to do.

"I don't think anybody is under the illusion that Burma's arrived, that they're where they need to be," Obama told a news conference as he began a three-country Asian tour, his first trip abroad since winning a second term.

"On the other hand, if we waited to engage until they had achieved a perfect democracy, my suspicion is we'd be waiting an awful long time," he said.

The Myanmar visit, less than two weeks after his re-election, is the centerpiece of a trip aimed at showing Obama is serious about shifting the U.S. strategic focus eastwards as America winds down wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The so-called "Asia pivot" is also meant to counter China's rising influence.

But Obama arrives with his attention divided as he faces a mounting conflict in the Gaza Strip and grapples with a looming fiscal crisis at home.

"Obama's trip to Burma risks providing an undeserved seal of approval to the military-dominated government that is still violating human rights," Brad Adams, Asia director at Human Rights Watch, said before the president arrived in the region.

Obama's aides said he was determined to "lock in" democratic changes already under way but will also press for further action, including freeing remaining political prisoners and stronger efforts to curb ethnic and sectarian violence.

A senior U.S. official said Obama would announce the resumption of U.S. aid programmes in Myanmar during his visit, anticipating assistance of $170 million in fiscal 2012 and 2013, but this, too, would be dependent on further reforms.

"The president will be announcing that the United States is re-establishing a USAID mission in Burma, which has been suspended for many years," the official told reporters in Bangkok, declining to be named.

"Our continued ramping-up of our efforts within Burma is contingent upon the government continuing to address the issues at hand on political reform, on national reconciliation and on a development that reaches their people," the official added.

The United States has softened sanctions and removed a ban on most imports from Myanmar in response to reforms already undertaken, but it has set conditions for the full normalization of relations, such as the release of all political detainees.

PRISONER RELEASE

Late on Sunday, state television in Myanmar said 66 more prisoners would be released on Monday, bringing to 518 the number released over the past week.

The previous batch did not appear to include any political prisoners, but a senior prison department official, who declined to be identified, told Reuters that Myint Aye, a prominent human rights activist, would be among those freed on Monday.

Obama will make his first stop at the Parliament Building in Yangon, the former capital of Myanmar, for talks with Thein Sein. He will see Suu Kyi at the lakeside villa where she was held under house arrest for most of the past two decades until her release in 2010. Obama will then cap his six-hour visit with a speech at Yangon University.

Violence between majority Buddhists and the Rohingya Muslim minority in western Myanmar is a top concern, and Obama's aides said he would address the issue directly with Myanmar's leaders.

At least 167 people were killed in two periods of violence in Rakhine state in June and October this year.

Myanmar considers the Rohingya Muslims to be illegal immigrants from neighboring Bangladesh and does not recognize them as citizens. A Reuters investigation into the wave of sectarian assaults painted a picture of organized attacks against the Muslim community.

Thein Sein, in a letter to U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon last week, promised to tackle the root causes of the problem, the United Nations said.

Despite human rights concerns, the White House sees Myanmar as a legacy-building success story of Obama's policy of seeking engagement with U.S. enemies, a strategy notably that has gone almost nowhere with countries like Iran and North Korea.

Obama's visit to Myanmar, sandwiched between stops in Thailand and Cambodia, also fits the administration's strategy of trying to lure China's neighbors out of Beijing's orbit.

Obama's trip comes almost a year after he said he saw "flickers of progress" in Myanmar and dispatched Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to visit the isolated country.

Clinton, who does not plan to stay in her post beyond Obama's first term, will join Obama on his Myanmar visit.

For Obama, the visit carries added significance. He received his Nobel Peace Prize less than a year after taking office in 2009. The award was widely seen as recognizing him more for lofty speech-making than for any major accomplishment on the world stage. This is a chance to tout a foreign policy success. (Reporting By Matt Spetalnick; Editing by Alan Raybould and Raju Gopalakrishnan)

Apple stock drop could relate to worries about capital gains tax hike, analysts say

Click photo to enlarge

NEW YORK -- Gravity has taken hold of Apple (AAPL) , and a lot of investors have been smacked on the head.

Apple, the largest U.S. stock by market value, was headed toward its eighth straight week of declines on Friday, as the rush to secure profits before a potential hike in capital gains taxes next year has investors dumping the market favorite.

Since hitting a record high of $705.07 a share in September, Apple has lost about a quarter of its value. The stock's descent has vastly outpaced those of the S&P 500, which is down just under 7 percent in the same time frame.

"No individual investment can defy gravity," said Erik Davidson, deputy chief investment officer for Wells Fargo Private Bank, in San Francisco.

The declines have shaved about $170 billion off the Cupertino company's market capitalization -- or just a bit more than the entire value of Coca-Cola. Apple is still currently worth about $493 billion, about $100 billion more than the second-most valuable U.S. company, Exxon Mobil.

Apple on Friday afternoon was little changed, up 0.2 percent at $526.59.

Taxes on capital gains and dividends are likely to rise next year as part of an expected deficit-cutting deal to avoid the so-called fiscal cliff of scheduled tax hikes and spending cuts.

With a stock

like Apple, where investors may have large embedded capital gains as a result of its stellar run, selling now locks in gains and offsets the possibility of higher taxes next year. The uncertainty over the outcome of talks in Washington over the fiscal cliff has sapped the natural inclination to buy declining shares.

"Some of the selling is being driven by these tax decisions, but the flip side is there is not a lot of buyers because the buyers are procrastinating to see how the negotiations come out," said Bucky Hellwig, senior vice president at BB&T Wealth Management in Birmingham, Alabama. "You probably have an inordinate effect to the downside because of these tax strategies."

The current 15 percent tax rate on dividends and capital gains is scheduled at expire at year end, and the two items are to revert back to being taxed as ordinary income, which means the highest earners would face rates of 35 percent.

The recent plunge is a reversal of fortune for high-flying Apple, those though the shares remain up about 30 percent for the year so far. Apple shares have rise every year since 2003 with the exception of 2008, when the market was struck by the global financial crisis.

"If you've got all these gains -- which a lot of Apple investors have because it's done very, very well -- then you're going to see selling in the likes of Apple and other companies that have had good runs," Davidson said.

Apple's stock has been below both its 14-day and 50-day moving average for over a month, suggesting both the short- and mid-term momentum is negative.

Despite the declines, Thomson Reuters StarMine estimates the stock's intrinsic value is about $833.90 a share. That figure is derived from analyst estimates for growth over the next five years and StarMine's expected growth rates for several years after that.

Given that the stock is likely worth more than where it is trading, tax concerns are probably playing into the recent weakness, said Phil Orlando, chief equity market strategist at Federated Investors, in New York.

"I think the stock is worth $750," said Orlando.

"If you are sitting here looking at Apple trading at $500, you say, 'Well the stock ought to be 50 percent higher over the course of the next year or two,' so the stock looks pretty attractive."

Is renting our house to friends for a couple years ... - Zillow Real ...

wetdawgs nailed all the key points pretty well in my opinion, but I will give you my 2 cents regarding renting to friends/family/etc:

In all of my years managing my own rental assets I had always avoided friends and family because of all the "bad" stories I had heard.? Once I reached a financial position where if a tenant did not pay the rent for "x" amount of time I could afford to evict them and find somebody else...my fears evaporated.

Not sure where you are financially, but be prepared for the following "common" experiences in regards to renting to loved ones--granted some family/friends would never do this, but expect it in the back of your mind:

1. They get REALLY comfortable and bend some?rules in the contract.? IE parties, etc.
2. They get even MORE comfortable and decide to not pay you the rent for a month, or two, until they "get back on their feet."? Or they will pay you constantly late?and never include a late fee because they don't think it applies to them since you guys are good buddies/related? (This happened to me this year with one tenant that didn't pay 2 months of rent, a friend+family?I have known for over 20 years!).
3. They don't want to "bother you" with problems on the property, and will let them ride out for years...until the problem is too bad to ignore, and it then ends up costing YOU tons more money to repair.? Logic in this?? You guys are pals, and they don't want to hassle your life.

In either of the 3 points prepare for sob stories that will break your heart, and tug at your emotions.

Best wishes from So-Cal and good luck

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

How insects domesticate bacteria to live symbiotically: Symbiotic microbes' origin discovered after man impales hand on branch

ScienceDaily (Nov. 15, 2012) ? Two years ago, a 71-year-old Indiana man impaled his hand on a branch after cutting down a dead crab apple tree, causing an infection that led University of Utah scientists to discover a new bacterium and solve a mystery about how bacteria came to live inside insects.

Because the new bacterial strain is easy to grow in the laboratory and is related to Sodalis, a genus of bacteria that lives symbiotically inside insects' guts, it may be possible to genetically alter the new bacteria so they can block disease transmission by insects like tsetse flies and prevent crop damage by insect-borne viruses.

"If we can genetically modify a bacterium that could be put back into insects, it could be used as a way to combat diseases transmitted by those insects," says Adam Clayton, a University of Utah Ph.D. student in biology and a first author of a study unveiling the new bacterium and its genome or "genetic blueprint."

The study will be published Thursday, Nov. 15 in the Public Library of Science's online journal PLoS Genetics.

It "shows the origin of the mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship between bacteria and insects," says biology Ph.D. student Kelly Oakeson, the study's other first author. "There are bacteria in the environment that form symbiotic relationships with insects. This is the first time such a bacterium has been found and studied."

Colin Dale, the study's senior author and an associate professor of biology, says the findings provide "a missing link in our understanding of how beneficial insect-bacteria relationships originate. Our work shows specifically that these relationships arise independently in each insect. This is a surprising conclusion: the insect picks up a pathogen that is widespread in the environment and then domesticates it. This happens independently in each insect."

A competing theory is that parasitic wasps and mites spread symbiotic bacteria from one insect to another. Dale says that theory cannot explain why such similar types of bacteria are found in insects that differ widely in location and diet, including insects that feed either on plants or animals.

The new study supports the theory that insects are infected by pathogenic bacteria from plants or animals in their environment, and that the bacteria evolve to become less virulent and provide benefits to the insect. Then, instead of spreading from one insect to another, the bacteria are spread from mother insects to their offspring.

The National Science Foundation and National Institutes of Health funded the study. Clayton, Oakeson and Dale ran the study with University of Utah undergraduates Maria Gutin and Arthur Pontes; Robert Weiss, a human genetics professor, and two of his lab members, senior lab specialist Diane Dunn and computer technician Andrew von Niederhausern; and Mark Fisher, an assistant professor of pathology.

Taming Invading Bacteria

Various bacteria live symbiotically in blood or fat cells or special structures attached to the guts of as many as 10 percent of all insects. The bacteria gain shelter and nutrition from their insect hosts, and they produce nutrients -- notably B vitamins and amino acids -- to help feed the insects. Sometimes they also produce toxins to kill other invaders, such as fungi or the eggs laid within an insect by a parasitic wasp.

Sodalis is only one of several types of bacteria that live in insects. Symbiotic bacteria are known for having the smallest genetic blueprints or genomes of any cellular organism because as they evolve comfortably within an insect, they lose genes no longer needed for survival outside the insect.

The study discovered a new bacterium from the Indiana man's wound -- a strain the researchers call HS, based on Clayton referring to it as "human Sodalis." The researchers sequenced its genome, showing HS has a relatively large genetic blueprint and is closely related to Sodalis-like bacteria that have smaller genomes and live in many species of insects -- implying that they all descended from a bacterium like HS.

How a Retired Inventor's Impaled Hand Led to New Science

On Oct. 15, 2010, Thomas Fritz -- a retired inventor, engineer and volunteer firefighter -- cut down a dead, 10-foot-tall crab apple tree outside his home near Evansville, Ind. As he dragged away the debris, he got tangled in it and fell. A small branch impaled his right hand in the fleshy web between the thumb and index finger.

A former emergency medical technician, Fritz dressed the wound, which became swollen, and then he waited for a scheduled semiannual exam with his doctor a few days later. By then, a cyst had formed at the wound site. The doctor put Fritz on an antibiotic after aspirating a fluid sample from the cyst and sending it to a lab.

The pain and swelling persisted and the wound became abscessed. About five weeks after the accident, an orthopedic surgeon removed several pieces of bark from the wound, which finally healed without further incident.

Only later did Fritz find out that the infected fluid from his wound contained the previously unknown HS bacteria that revealed how insects domesticated bacteria.

"Being kind of a scientist, I thought, 'Okay, this is how things happen sometimes,'" says Fritz, now 73. "I have strong faith, and I think God did this for a purpose -- gaining of additional knowledge -- and that's wonderful."

Identifying a New Strain of Bacteria

The lab that first received fluid from Fritz' infected wound couldn't identify the bacterium isolated from it. So the organism was shipped to ARUP Laboratories, a national pathology reference library operated by the University of Utah.

Discovering new bacteria isn't unusual, says microbiologist Fisher, ARUP's medical director of bacteriology and antimicrobial testing. A 2008 study found 215 new bacterial species in samples sent to clinical labs during 2001-2007. In a study earlier this year, Fisher and colleagues found up to 673 new species of bacteria among more than 26,000 clinical samples analyzed during 2006-2010.

An automated analysis at ARUP said the bacterium from Fritz was E. coli, but Fisher says that medical technologists doubted those results.

"We had close matches for it, but none were validly described species. In fact, one of the matches mentioned endosymbionts related to Sodalis," Fisher says. "It caught my eye because I knew Colin Dale worked on Sodalis."

Dale discovered and named Sodalis in 1999. He says genetic sequencing showed the HS bacterium is related to bacteria that live symbiotically in 17 different insect species, including tsetse flies, weevils, bird lice and stinkbugs, and is most closely related to bacteria in the chestnut weevil and a stinkbug species.

The study compared the genomes of strain HS; Sodalis glossinidius, which lives in tsetse flies; and another Sodalis-like bacterium that lives in grain weevils.

Compared with HS, the other two bacterial species have lost or deactivated about half their genes. Analysis shows the rice weevil bacterium was domesticate by the weevil at least 28,000 years ago, and Sodalis glossinidius at some earlier date within the past 100,000 years -- much more recently than once thought, Dale says.

A Way to Block Some Insect-Spread Diseases?

Tsetse flies and aphids both carry symbiotic Sodalis bacteria related to strain HS. Sodalis doesn't grow well outside of insects, but HS grows well in the lab.

So it may be possible to insert genes in HS and then place the bacteria in tsetse flies to kill the protozoan parasites that live in the flies and cause sleeping sickness among people and domestic animals in sub-Saharan Africa, Dale says.

Aphids transmit many plant viruses that attack soybeans, alfalfa, beets, beans and peanuts. Replacing their normal symbiotic bacteria with a genetically engineered strain of HS could interfere with disease transmission by aphids and other insects, he adds.

The study speculates that in addition to the HS bacterium, there likely are many other undiscovered bacteria in the environment that could form symbiotic relationships with insects.

"We have identified very few of the bacteria that exist in nature, and new species and strains like HS are often only discovered when they infect humans."

PST: Beckham still a marketing tour de force

David Beckham?s influence has waned slightly on the field for the Los Angeles Galaxy. He?s 37 and, lately, fighting through some injuries, so some decline in impact can hardly be a shocker.

On the other hand, soccer?s iconic midfielder and free kick specialist remains a marketing tour du force, apparently.

Just two days ago, Swiss watch maker Breitling announced that Beckham had signed on as a new endorsing partner.

The new ad campaign is in full swing; I noticed a full page ad in this morning New York Times featuring the smoldering stare of Mr. Beckham.

The Galaxy midfielder didn?t need to travel far for his first major shoot; the ads you will see (and the video below) were shot at the Mojave Air & Space Port in California.

Class of RNA molecules protects germ cells from damage

ScienceDaily (Nov. 15, 2012) ? Passing one's genes on to the next generation is a mark of evolutionary success. So it makes sense that the body would work to ensure that the genes the next generation inherits are exact replicas of the originals.

New research by biologists at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine has now identified one way the body does exactly that. This protective role is fulfilled in part by a class of small RNA molecules called pachytene piwi-interacting RNAs, or piRNAs. Without them, germ-cell development in males comes to a halt. Because these play such an important role in allowing sperm to develop normally, the research indicates that defects in these molecules or the molecules with which they interact may be responsible for some cases of male infertility.

Jeremy Wang, an associate professor of developmental biology and director of the Center for Animal Transgenesis and Germ Cell Research at Penn Vet, and Ke Zheng, a postdoctoral researcher in Wang's lab, authored the study, which appears in PLoS Genetics.

Scientists know of 8 million different piRNAs in existence; they are the most abundant type of small non-coding RNA. The molecule piRNA gets its name because it forms complexes with piwi proteins. Earlier work had indicated that these piwi-piRNA complexes suppress the activity of transposable elements or "jumping genes," which are stretches of DNA that can change position and cause potentially damaging genetic mutations. These sequences are also known as transposons.

"There are about 50 human diseases caused by transposable elements, so it's important for the body to have a way to try to repress them," Wang said.

This transposon-suppressing activity had been confirmed in a group of piRNAs called pre-pachytene piRNAs, which are expressed before meiosis, the unique process by which germ cells divide. But Zheng and Wang wanted to investigate if a separate group of piRNAs that emerge during meiosis, called pachytene piRNAs, were also required for "silencing" transposons.

Working in male mice, the researchers manipulated an enzyme called MOV10L1, which is known to interact with piwi proteins and is believed to help produce piRNA molecules. They created a mutant mouse in which they could selectively inactivate MOV10L1 at specific stages before, during and after meiosis. The mice that lost the function of MOV10L1 before or at the pachytene stage of meiosis were sterile. When Zheng and Wang examined their germ cells more closely, they found that spermatogenesis had apparently come to a halt at the post-meiotic stage: Early stages of the germ cells were present, but the mice completely lacked mature sperm.

Further experiments allowed Zheng and Wang to pinpoint that MOV10L1 was playing a critical role at the pachytene stage. MOV10L1 mutants lacked pachytene piRNAs, but their levels of pre-pachytene piRNAs were unaffected, as the mutation was "turned on" after they had already been produced.

The researchers also found that, in the MOV10L1 mutants, piwi proteins congregated together along with mitochondria, suggesting that mitochondria may be involved in the generation or organization of pachytene piRNAs. Furthermore, the spermatids, or early-stage sperm, of the mutants had severe DNA damage. While the researchers suspected that the damage may have been caused because of transposons that had been freed from repression in the absence of piRNAs, they actually found that two common transposable elements were not de-repressed in the mutants. They also found a build-up of pachytene piRNA precursors in the testes of the mutants. Their findings raise the possibility that there is another mechanism by which damage occurs.

"It could be the accumulation of precursor molecules is causing some of the damage," Wang said.

This new function for MOV10L1, in playing an essential role in producing pachytene piRNAs, gives researchers a greater understanding of germ-cell development.

"This is the first time we've shown that pachtyene piRNA is required for maintaining genome integrity in the post-meiotic germ cells," Wang said. "It turns out that MOV10L1 is a master regulator of the piRNA pathway and is required for the production of all piRNAs, both pre-pachytene and pachytene."

Any disruptions to this "master regulator" role, therefore, could lead to problems.

"I think we're just beginning to appreciate the significance of this pathway," Wang said. "Mutations at various points in the pathway could lead to infertility."

This research was supported by the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Mike London: ACC Teleconference

On Wednesday, UVa head coach Mike London fielded a host of questions about his team as they prepare for Thursday night's home tilt against North Carolina.

UVa head coach Mike London photo courtesy of VirginiaSports.com

MIKE LONDON: It's indeed an honor and privilege to be on ESPN Thursday night. I think one of the oldest rivalry games against North Carolina, a very good North Carolina team, outstanding talent. So we look forward to the challenge in tomorrow night's game. Questions.

Q. Your team has been involved in a couple shootouts, one with Louisiana Tech and another with Miami last week. Do you see more of the same tomorrow night?

LONDON: Well, it's hard to gauge at this point right now without having gotten into the game and seeing the ebb and flow of how it will go.

Obviously we want to make sure we score enough points to win the game and not give up that many points. I think Carolina has shown that they are very explosive offensive and put so many points up on the board that they are a quick-strike offense with a veteran quarterback in (Bryn)Renner and having outstanding height in their wide receivers.

And obviously the guy who makes it all go for them is (Gio) Bernard, who is the No. 1 in the nation in punt returns, rushing yards, total yards. So he's got the whole package.

So, we have our work cut out for us because there are so many weapons that they have, and you can see how they put all these points up on the board.

Q. The Coastal Division has been hard to predict this year. Why do you think it's been so hard for one of you guys to separate?

LONDON: Well, I've always said that there are a lot of outstanding coaches in the ACC, and not just the coastal, but the Atlantic, and every year, the team hits those cycles of the top end of your recruiting cycle, or you're losing veteran players that were significant contributors the season before. So a lot times, about the breaks; the bounces and breaks that you get.

It's hard to say, to put one emphasis on what it is. But I'll always attribute to the type of coaches that there, and whether it's a group of returning veterans that are in key spots is always something that's significant, as well.

It has been -- you're right. You look at our side of the division, and you know, it has been characterized as not ever thought of it being in the type of order that it's in at this point.

But with some more games left to play, there's still opportunities for teams who have been looked at as far as being the leaders of their conference to have chances to do that and teams like ourselves will still have chances to control their own destiny and looking for an opportunity to do that, as well.

Q. Do you think it's been a down year for the division?

LONDON: I wouldn't characterize it as a down year. There's so many times unless you're in the program itself, about who you have, who is back in those key positions, about the experience that you have.

As I said, I attribute a lot of it to coaching and parity a little bit. Guys are out coaching hard and they are getting great talent and they are taking the talent that they have, and particularly experienced talent, and using it to influence the type of games that they are playing.

I just think that this year, you look at all of the things that are going on, the wins and the home and away wins and the last-second wins; the year definitely is one that you can look at and say, who would have thought that.

Q. The injury report last night listed Maurice (Canady) as doubtful because of a medical condition. Do you have any update on him and his status for tomorrow night?

LONDON: I do not at this point. I know that there's some things that he's doing this morning and there's one last opportunity for him to do something this afternoon to determine his status.

So we are hopeful, but at the same time, any medical issues that would increase a player's opportunity to get further injured, then obviously we don't want to do that. But we'll know by the end of the day.

Q. And the NC State and Miami games, just points-wise, it's the best back-to-back games Virginia has had against Division IA competition in seven years. What has suddenly clicked in your offense the last two weeks?

LONDON: I think it's hand-in-hand. In the NC State game, there were several turnovers which gave us more opportunities as far as possessions.

There were more explosive plays -- you know, plays whether it was a ball throw down the field or runs. Like I said, defensively, there were turnovers, several turnover sacks, six sacks. We scored on defense with a safety.
I think in the Miami game, again, offense was quick and I always go back to third downs and look at third down, 9-for-14 and I believe they were 4-for-10.

So there's chances to extend your drive versus getting off the field.

You look at our quarterbacks, both of them that played, neither one gave up an interception. Of course an interception came from our tailback Perry Jones, but I think not giving the ball up and not giving turnovers has been a key for us.

It has not always presented itself; that in the previous games, in order for us to be successful, we are going to have to continue that trends, particularly against a very explosive North Carolina offense and a good defense.

Q. Given the success you've had in the five-day window last season going down to Miami, do you pretty much follow the same routine this week?

LONDON: I try to, yes. The only difference is when you're the team that's traveling, your Sunday and then your Wednesday-- the Sunday after your Saturday game and the Wednesday when you're using that to travel, can be affected.

So we feel pretty good about having a Sunday practice which is productive and today's practice, because we are at home, our guys are into the routine of being allowed to still go to class and still sleep in their own beds and just do different things like that.

We like the routine of if it was going to be a Thursday night quick turnaround game, rather it be the home game that's hosting the game because of the familiarity of the players and their daily routine.

Q. You've not played in a lot of Thursday night games in recent years. It's often speculated that it helps recruiting. What did you sense that last year's Miami victory on Thursday night enhanced your stature with recruits?

LONDON: I think without a doubt, when you have an opportunity to showcase on Thursday night, everyone is watching that game. ESPN is a great brand and does a great job of marketing it's programming, particularly on those Thursday nights.

You look at the last couple Thursday night games, you see teams that are playing that I think have received bumps in their recruiting.

So it's no different for us last year playing Miami down there and being successful that recruiting definitely was enhanced for us.

You know, and this year, you're not doing quite as well as what you want to being doing on the field, but having won the last two games and having changed a play on national TV again; again, you can improve your brand and you can improve the opportunity of exposure that we are looking at you and maybe take a second look at you because they see what you're doing on the field.

Q. Usually people think when you're juggling quarterbacks that it's not a very good situation, but it seems to have energized your offense. Can you talk about the philosophy behind playing both guys and using them back and forth in a game?

LONDON: Well, you have to have gone through the process of both of them having played and been starter and both of them having come in at the end of a game and seeing what they can do. Both of them's knowledge of the offense and both of them's skill set of the offense.

You know, when you look at ourselves, particularly going into the break, there were things that both Michael (Rocco) and Phillip (Sims) did well and there were some things that we could help them with in terms of other players and surrounding casts.

Coach Lazor and the offensive staff crafted a game plan or a menu of things that both of our quarterbacks could do and execute.

And I think that thus far, it has worked out in terms of what they can do and based on what was seen prior to the previous possession; and just so many other different things, a guy has a chance to look at from a sideline, what's going on with coverages and rotations of defenders and anticipating blitzes.

I think at this point, we are where we are with Michael and Phillip, and we'll continue to keep doing this and hopefully give us opportunities to win the last two regular-season games.

Q. Have you ever done anything like this before in your career?

LONDON: I've been around here at Virginia when Matt Schaub and Marques Hagans -- you know, I've seen different quarterbacks play in a game in previous teams that I've been on.

I know that it's not the most conventional, but each team has to decide what's in the best interests of the team and what's going to move the team forward. I've always said between those two guys, what makes it easier is that Michael is selfless and so is Phillip. They just want the team to win. They want to do whatever their part is to help us win.

When you have that mind-set from your two quarterbacks, then there's a lot of respect that they have garnered and a lot of things that the players on our team appreciate and admire and so they go out and play hard for whoever is taking the snaps.

China's Hu clears way for Xi to take party helm

BEIJING (AP) ? President Hu Jintao stepped aside as ruling party leader Wednesday to clear the way for Vice President Xi Jinping to take China's helm as part of only the second orderly transfer of power in 63 years of communist rule.

Hu and senior leaders mostly in their late 60s are handing over power to the leader-in-waiting Xi and other colleagues in their late 50s over the next several months. The new leadership faces daunting challenges including slowing growth in the world's No. 2 economy, rising unrest among increasing assertive citizens and delicate relations with neighboring countries.

In keeping with the widely anticipated succession plans, Hu was not re-elected a member of the party's Central Committee on the final day of a pivotal party congress, showing that he's no longer in the leadership, said two delegates, speaking on condition of anonymity because the official list of members had not yet been released.

It was still unclear whether Hu would relinquish his most powerful remaining position as head of the commission that oversees the military, or hold onto it for a transitional period as previous retiring leaders have done.

Delegates said they cheered when the announced results of secret balloting showed that Xi had been unanimously chosen for the committee, a step toward being named to the topmost panel, the Politburo Standing Committee, and becoming party leader as expected on Thursday. Li Keqiang, designated as the next premier, also was elected to the panel, the state Xinhua News Agency said.

"We were very happy and the whole assembly responded with warm applause," said delegate Si Zefu, president of the Dongfang Electric Corporation based in the central city of Chengdu.

As the final day of the weeklong congress drew to a close in the Great Hall of the People, after reporters were invited into the secretive proceedings, Hu gathered papers before him on the dais of leaders, shook hands with people in the row behind him and walked off the stage.

Sitting on the dais next to Hu was his predecessor, 86-year-old Jiang Zemin, who has emerged as a key power-broker, maneuvering his allies into the leadership at the expense of Hu. Jiang had to be helped up by attendants when congress members stood for the communist anthem, the Internationale. Afterward, Jiang turned to Hu and shook hands before being escorted offstage.

The party's 2,200-plus delegates also rubber-stamped the report Hu delivered last week committing the party to continuing a pro-economic growth agenda while retaining firm political control. Hu urged stronger measures to rein in corruption and make the government more responsive to public demands, but offered little in the way of specifics.

The next lineup of China's most powerful body, the Politburo Standing Committee, will be announced on Thursday. Though congress and Central Committee delegates have some influence over leadership decisions, most of the lineup is decided among a core group of the most powerful party members and elders.

The congress votes are "fully democratic" but "there is a degree of inevitability," actor and party delegate Song Guofeng of Liaoning province said as entered the hall Wednesday for the final session.

"We need to have continuity in leadership to carry on," Song said. "They are already in the leadership core. The stability of the party and of the county is important."

Xi and Li ? part of a generation schooled at a time of more openness to the West than their predecessors ? are shoo-ins for the nine-member Standing Committee. But other positions on the panel ? which may be reduced to seven members ? were believed up for grabs and the subject of intense jockeying ahead of the congress.

Wang Qishan was named to the party's disciplinary body in a sign he would likely be named to the top committee.

China's leadership transitions are always occasions for fractious backroom bargaining, but this one has been further complicated by scandals that have fed public cynicism that their leaders are more concerned with power and wealth than government.

In recent months, Bo Xilai, a senior politician seen as a rising star, was purged after his aide exposed that his wife murdered a British businessman. An ally of Hu's was sidelined after his son died in the crash of a Ferrari he shouldn't have been able to afford. And foreign media recently reported that relatives of Xi and outgoing Premier Wen Jiabao had amassed vast wealth. The scandals have weakened Hu, on whose watch they occurred.

Hu, who will remain president until March, took over as party boss in 2002 in the first power transfer that did not involve the death of a leader or unseating of a successor.

In a nod to Hu's 10 years in power, the congress upgraded his pet theory, the Scientific Outlook on Development, to rank alongside other key schools of thought in the party constitution such as Marxism-Leninsim and Mao Zedong Thought. Hu's program called for more balanced growth in an attempt to distribute benefits more fairly across society.

The congress is a largely ceremonial gathering of representatives ? mostly carefully selected from the national and provincial political and military elite. The real deal-making for the top positions is done behind the scenes by the true power-holders.

The newly selected Central Committee meets Thursday to select the next Politburo and from that, the Politburo Standing Committee, largely on the advice of influential leaders.

Invi Turns Texting Into A Rich Media Experience, Raises $750K

inviInvi, a startup trying to integrate a broad range of media into the texting experience, is launching on Google Play today. It's also announcing a seed round of $750,000 from Li Ka-Shing's Horizons Ventures, Atlantic Bridge, and various angel investors. Co-founder Iddo Tal argued that texting has become "totally unattached from what the smartphone can do." If someone wants to share an image from Pinterest or a video from YouTube, it's a clunky experience ? they'll probably send you a link, which means you have to leave the conversation behind while you open up a browser or a separate app.
